MWC Offers Help to Migrant Workers Affected by Fire in Geylang

    06 December 2014

The Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) was alerted to a fire that occurred in a migrant workers' quarters in Geylang this morning that claimed the lives of migrant workers and injured several others. The MWC is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life from this incident and will do our best in the coming days to assist the deceased and their next-of-kin, and be readily available to the injured workers.

We take a very serious view of safe and secure housing for migrant workers and urge the authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly and where appropriate, call those responsible to account.

Since 8 am Saturday morning, the MWC has been working with the Ministry of Manpower, the Singapore Police Force and hospital staff where those injured in the fire are being treated to better understand the current situation and communicate with the injured workers. Our foremost objective is to find out how they are and reassure them of our readiness to assist them, should their employer for any reason be unable to do so.
