MWC Ready to do its part to Combat Human Trafficking
A bill to combat human trafficking was among four passed on 3 November 2014 during a Parliament session. While MPs hailed a new law to combat the scourge of human trafficking as historic and timeline, they wanted harsher penalties and more protection for victims. MWC is very encouraged by the passing of the Prevention of Human Trafficking Bill yesterday and will commit itself to supplementing the efforts of the authorities in the fight against human trafficking.
Dormitory conditions MWC championed for formed core of the Bill
Separately, it was also announced in a first reading of the Foreign Employee Dormitories Bill on 4 November 2014 that large purpose-built dormitories for foreign workers will need to be licensed by the second half of next year, should the Bill be passed. Under the proposed Bill, operators or proprietors must obtain a license to run the dorms, on top of existing regulatory standards.
Being something very close to MWC’s heart, we have voiced our support for the Bill. MWC is most heartened that the same conditions that it consistently championed for – the management of safety and health as well as security and public order and the provision and management of social and commercial facilities and services – form the core of the present Bill and licensing framework.
Attached are the media statements that MWC issued.
