The Committee of Inquiry (COI) released its report which included factors and circumstances leading to the riot and its recommendations on 30 June 2014.
In response to the report, the Migrant Workers’ Centre said that the findings on the well-being and congregation of migrant workers in specific locations in Singapore resonated with MWC because its advocacy focuses on the same issues that were deliberated by the COI – the welfare of migrant workers in Singapore and increasing the protection made available to them.
The MWC reiterated its strong belief that protecting migrant workers’ interests here is critical towards sustaining the valuable contributions they make to our own nation-building and creating the inclusive society and environment that Singaporeans hope to have. MWC added that it would double its efforts to be the voice of migrant workers here and champion further enhancements in our laws and attitudes to further improve their well-being.
MWC is also encouraged by the Minister for Manpower Tan Chuan-Jin’s response to the findings by the COI. In particular, we commend his commitment to moving towards a skilled migrant workforce and improving housing options and living conditions for migrant workers in Singapore. These are areas that the MWC has advocated strongly for in the past two years.
