From Intern to Volunteer - How MWC sparked my passion

"With the support of Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC), I am presently assisting Catholic Junior College (CJC) in one of their Service Learning Program project.  The project aims to allow students to have a deeper appreciation of the social and economic problems of migrant workers in Singapore.

My motivation behind this collaboration is derived from my internship with MWC in December 2013.

During the internship, I was fully immersed in the migrant worker community. I was given the opportunity to visit recreational centres, dormitories and soup kitchens. I also experienced the planning of the annual International Migrants’ Day. Such an immersive experience gave me a very holistic picture of the life of a migrant worker in Singapore.

In comparison to classroom lessons and reading the news, I thought that youths could have a better understanding of the migrant worker community if they had an experience similar to mine. Interaction with NGOs and the workers could widen their horizon and allow them to have a sense of a migrant worker’s life in Singapore.

Many of my friends and family do not know of MWC until I shared with them my internship experience. I thought that the MWC staff were deserving of more recognition and that members of the public should have a higher degree of awareness about MWC. MWC would stand to gain if more members of the public are aware and become supportive of their points of advocacy.

In a nutshell, I am of the opinion that NGOs should invest in public education to gain greater public awareness. This in turn could potentially result in a stronger voice supporting their cause. I hope to help MWC achieve this through my present work."
