    The Geylang Food Project

The Geylang Food Project is a collaborative effort by MWC and HealthServe which aims to provide meals for needy migrant workers who continue to remain in Singapore, awaiting work injury claims, settling employment disputes or have been abandoned by their employers. For various reasons, the employers, or former employers of these workers no longer provide care for them.

Low-wage migrant workers are vulnerable to having to fend for themselves, especially when an employer-employee relationship breaks down. Together with other dangers like  possible abuse and discretionary repatriation by the employer to jeopardize the claims process, workers awaiting the conclusion of their claims often have a myriad of challenges, anxieties and concerns.

The MWC and our strategic partner HealthServe try to alleviate some of these challenges by providing daily free-of-charge access to hot meals (lunch & dinner) at 2 locations within the Geylang area. Workers simply have to do a simple registration at any of the locations to enjoy their free meal for as long as they require the service.

The MWC assisted almost 4,000 workers last year through the statutory claims processes – including making simple clarifications or referrals; providing further assistance with claims lodging, shelter and meals; and representations to the Ministry of Manpower for those deserving more specialised help. For many distressed workers, the Geylang Food Project hopes to alleviate the added anxiety and discomfort of having to search for the next meal.

Interested donors who wish to donate or aid in funding of The Geylang Food Project can send an email to feedback@mwc.org.sg or visit any of the two MWC Centres for more information.
